Getting Started On Ice Fishing

Posted on: September 1, 2011

Ice fishing has been around for a long time now both as a necessity and as a hobby.  The basics of fishing have been really the same over time, including techniques and equipment although they have been developed to adapt to modernization, especially in the last couple of decades.

Fishing on ice is considered a global phenomenon and has become an unusual sport. Lake Simcoe is America and Canada's ice fishingcapital while there are so many other spots in Russia, Finland, and Northern China. Due to this widespread of ice anglers exposing themselves on ice for one and same reason: to fish. To do so, they will need the most basic equipment.

What It Takes To Play The Game

It has been a thing of the past to drill a hole and wait for a fish to bite but there are still many traditionalists who do so. One of the differences of a modern ice angler is mobility—they can go around and use sleds instead of boats, which are not very expensive as people would think. There are many simple and sturdy models available if you just look hard enough.

Of the many equipment available, the ice fishing jigs are the most essential. They are the least inexpensive pieces of equipment that every angler needs. Together with the jig, check the floater kits that are readily available. This is perfect when you are getting started.

The Convenience of Modern Fishing

The way that ice fishing is thought to get a catch is to cut the ice and simply sit on a stool waiting for something to take the bait. So many things have changed with the modern angler! They can now have heated full on ice fishing houses that are complete with amenities and even bunks versus those lightweight one-man portable shelters and simple shanties. These shelters are very important because they can spend much longer, even in many days out there on the thick ice. They can actually go ahead and sleep while fishing, thanks to the "line alarms".

To Begin

There is no need to break your budget to get started with this new sport. Flocks of people have started going to the Hwacehon Ice FishingFestival in South Korea annually. They also sometimes go to Finland to try the sport. In Gull Lake in Minnesota, one of the largest competitions in the world for ice anglers is held every January.

Specific lakes and areas are pinpointed in maps that can actually be nearest your place or wherever you are in the world. All you need will be the right essential equipment to pack and you can start right away!
